Fall Break 2024: Oh, Canada!

After leaving Maine, we kept driving north to visit Canada! I've been there before when I lived in Montana as a kid, but I haven't been back as an adult. And Andrew and Caroline had never been. I looked up a cute town not too far from the border and we drove up just to stay a night. At the border crossing, we discovered that pepper spray is ILLEGAL in Canada. Oops. Both Caroline and I usually travel with our pepper spray. So we had to pull over and turn them over to Canadian authorities. Kind of annoying. And maybe I have a permanent record there now?

More pretty views along the way.
We REALLY wanted to see a moose while we were
in the area. We kept looking near ponds and streams
where we thought we might catch one getting a drink.
We stopped for gas and got to see one...
But not in the way that we expected. :0
It was dead in the back of that flatbed!
It must've been moose hunting season because
we saw several others in the back of trucks
over the next couple days.

Andrew got this weird red hot dog at the gas station
while C and I were checking out the moose.
He said it was delicious.

When in Canada,
you must stop at Tim Horton's.

It's a donut place.

We were fans.

The little town we stopped at was called St. Andrews by-the-sea.
So perfect for us!

There are deer all over town

So cute!

They gave a cute downtown area.
We liked walking around their little shops.

Don't think I've ever seen a sign advertising
a found partial denture...

We loved buying all the candy in the dollar store.

So many fun options!

Their smarties are called "Rockets"

And Canadian Smarties are kinda like M&M's.

We loved exploring along the waterfront.

Cute little baby lighthouse

I loved this whale weather vane.

More deer

One of the most unique stops we've ever made:
Ministers Island.
The operating hours are based on the tides because
you have to wait for the tide to go out and then you
DRIVE ACROSS THE OCEAN!
What the heck???

On the other side, they have several historical
buildings that you can tour. Just make sure you're back in time
before the tide comes in or you're stuck there! Ha!

They had some great exhibits.
We loved checking them out.

Home fun:
Profusely illustrated

Look at the size of that pool table!!

She doesn't climb EVERYTHING like
B used to, but once in a while, we'll catch
her with the itch to climb.

These old stable buildings are gorgeous.

I'm not sure if it's because the American dollar is more
valuable there or because it was the off-season, but
I was able to get us a GREAT room at a bougie resort.
It was GORGEOUS. I'd love to go back for more than one night!

They had fire pits and on-site activities.
We were tired out and didn't do anything.

Well, Andrew and Caroline were tired out.
I dropped them off and went out birding.
More close encounters with deer.

Nothing too exciting.
A Great Black-Backed Gull.

But the sunset was pretty

And the moonrise was awesome!

I was a little bit afraid I wasn't going to be
able to find my way back to the car in the dark.
But it worked out.

The next morning, we headed back to the US.
We stopped in Hartford, CT.
We had an appointment to do family baptisms
at the Hartford Temple.

What a fun way to spend an evening!

I loved it so much!

It's a gorgeous temple.

We stayed the night in Hartford.
(At a cheap-non-bougie, non-picture worthy place).
We dropped Andrew off at the airport the next morning
and Bear and I headed home.

We continued to be blown away by the fall foliage.

It was fantastic!

We listened to a crazy non-fiction audiobook called
Killing the Witches. And had fun belting out songs, too.

Another wonderful fall break in the books!
