As soon as the family reunion was over, Caroline and Andrew flew home so that C could go to girls camp. A few months ago, when I realized that, I called Barb and asked if she would be up for road tripping across the country with me. I thought she might need some time to think it over, check her calendar, talk with Dennis... but as soon as I finished asking she excited replied, "Yes!" Woo hoo! Girls trip! We were both so excited to have that time together exploring and playing.

Road Trip 2024: Utah to Michigan
First stop:
50 cent ice cream cones at Little America.
Yes!
We decided we should try to include ice cream
in our agenda every day. Ha!
Second stop: Laramie
Spent some time exploring the cute shops
that Caroline and I discovered last
time we were in Laramie.
And we discovered our favorite new place:
The Sugar Mouse
It is THE cutest little tea shop.
And they have ACTUAL sugar mice--
a traditional British treat.
Aren't they adorable???
I was in love with the decor.
Cute little mice everywhere.
We got yummy cool beverages for the summer day.
I definitely want to stop here again.
Just the two of us...
and miles of highway ahead of us!
Next stop: Cheyenne
Our good friends, the Browns, just finished serving
as mission leaders in the Charlotte mission and have
returned home to Cheyenne. It was SO fun to stop
at their place and have dinner with them.
I love the Browns!
And I hope our paths cross again in the future.
AI helped plan the stops for our next day of travel.
And one of the gems that it found was on
the University of Nebraska campus:
The International Quilt Museum.
What a perfect stop for the pro-quilter in the family!
Oh my gosh.
The quilts were stunning.
They were works of art.
We had so much fun exploring them.
Even the building is quilted!
The next AI-recommended stop was at
the church's visitor's center in Winter Quarters.
It was not far out of the way AT ALL and I can't
believe I've never stopped here before.
There's a temple across the street through
those trees, but you can't really tell...
We enjoyed walking around
and reading about the pioneers.
The above pic is an odometer that
allowed the wagons to measure the
distance they had traveled.
Our next stop was spontaneous and one of those
where effective billboards worked and made us
take the exit to find little Denmark in the middle
of small-town Elk Horn, IA.
There were some CUTE little buildings.
And a bust of Hans Christian Andersen.
Also drove to the Museum of Danish America,
but it was closed for the day.
The no-longer Ugly Duckling
We did a little birding and I got a new lifer--
the Dickcissel.
Pretty sunset
The next day we got to drive through Iowa City
and stop by the University of Iowa, where Grandma
spent many summers growing up while her Dad
was working on his doctorate.
The stadium
The city
The Iowa River
One of Barb's fond memories from her childhood was
the "twirly bridge". How the heck do you find that???
Our googling didn't help, so we just walked around campus for a bit.
And we found it!!
What a thrill!
She also remembers going to church in the Student Union.
and hearing people bowling during sacrament meeting. Ha!
We picked up our daily ice cream cones while we were there.
Yum.
Walking around college campuses is fun.
And we made it Michigan!
It was a new state for me.
And I think for Barb, too.
We got to have a quick visit with Jonas and Carly!
Look at that sunset!!
Jonas is getting his PhD at the Univ of Michigan.
They took us to our second college campus of the day. :)
They have GORGEOUS buildings!
They took us downtown to get...
ICE CREAM!
Our second of the day!
Living our best lives. Ha!
So glad we could have a quick visit with Jonas and Carly!

Road Trip 2024: Sweat Family Reunion
In early 2024, we started coordinating with Andrew's side of the family and figured out that we all had some time available in July. Hooray! Reunion time! As our families grow and kids move out and away, we're still figuring out how to do family reunions. And this year's ended up being SO MUCH FUN. I asked everyone if they could be in charge of part of the reunion. The whole burden of planning wouldn't be on one person. And we would have a variety of activities. It sounded great, but then it blew my expectations away. It was A BLAST!
Day 1: Grandma and Grandpa were in charge and they
treated all of us to a day at Snowbird. It was PERFECT
weather and they have SO MANY great activities there.
We rode a tram up to the top.
The views!
We had *ALMOST* everyone there.
Carly, Amy, Macy, Dave, Jack, Angie, Forrest, Whit,
Caroline, Brandon, Me, Drew, Grandpa, Cal, Grandma,
Truman, Reagan, Elise, Tony, Cindy, Jane, and Nick.
This is the pic when Nick said, "Everyone say,
'Jane's pregnant!'"
Exciting! Congrats to them!
The matriarch and patriarch of the family. :)
Barb and Dennis with their four kids
Me and Andrew with our three kiddos
Yippee!
Another pic of everyone.
Grandma on the Alpine slide
B and Reagan racing on the Alpine slides.
I think Reggy won!
Carly doing the vertical drop.
Sister time!
More family time!
So glad B could come back up to SLC after
working a couple days in St. George.
It was so fun to be up in the tops of the mountains.
Chatting while waiting for the tram
Drew on the Alpine slide
The girls riding the lift
Some supermodels waiting in line
Bungee trampoline
Mountain coaster.
What a memorable way to spend the day together!
We went back to Grandma and Grandpa's house afterward.
People took turns working on the puzzle.
And then we did home fireworks that night.
My fave: sparkler pics!
Day 2 morning:
Tennis and games with Amy and Dave
Some of the tennis players in the family got to go
to the park and play games together. Jack, Macy,
and Carly are SOOO good! It was fun to play
with them and see how awesome they are firsthand.
After tennis, we came back to Grandma's
house for games.
The girls finished up a puzzle
We played a couple big group games, which were fun, too.
One was called "Corporation" where we all wrote
down a word in a category and then tried to figure out
who wrote down what. It's hard to explain, but it
was unique and really fun.
Day 2 Evening:
Epic lip sync battle with Tony and Cindy
Oh, wow. This was entertaining.
It started off with bang:
Nick performing Lady Gaga
What the heck????
Truman rocked it
Grandma and Grandpa did a little
Sonny and Cher: I got you, babe.
Sonny and Cher: I got you, babe.
Tony and Cindy did a country throwback,
"Don't take the girl."
Maddox got in the action with Baby Shark
Surprise!
Jack made a surprise last-minute performance.
Cal was all in on his choreography.
Carly and Macy did a hilarious song
about pants that I'd never heard.
We weren't told that we were doing the lip sync
battle until we had already left on the road trip,
so no costumes for us. In fact, the guys were
NOT on board when we told them about the battle.
But then they heard that even GRANDPA was
participating, they decided they could join in as well.
We did a fun ABBA number with some fun
dance moves and backup singers.
It was a beautiful evening afterward and we
played some outdoor games in the backyard.
Sweat Family Circus Tricks
Even more fun with cousins added in!
Day 3 morning: Family History Tour of SLC
with the Hallstroms
We met at Ang and Forr's place.
And Angie, one of our resident family historians,
drove us around to some of the apartments and homes
where Grandma and Grandpa lived in their early
married life. I should've taken notes, because now I forgot...
We also went to the SLC cemetery and Ang told
us about some of our family members who are buried there.
Including Shadrach and Besty Roundy
Got to say a quick hello to Wyatt while we were there.
And then we stopped by one of church
buildings in downtown SLC because THIS
fireplace used to be part of Grandma's Grandma's house!
How random is that???
Here's a picture of little Barbie and her sisters
in front of that very fireplace when they were little girls.
We ended our morning with a delicious lunch
at Ang and Forr's house. But I apparently didn't
take any pics of that.
That afternoon, a bunch of the family members
went to watch A Quiet Place: Day One
Andrew and I couldn't go because we were
prepping for our part of the reunion that evening.
But it didn't get rave reviews from those that went.
Day 3 Evening:
Sweat Family Survivor by Andrew
(with a little help by me)
Andrew put SO much work into planning this evening.
He is awesome! It was a lot of fun and I loved seeing
the competitive nature and creativity flow!
Bowling
(A shout-out to Grandma's time in a bowling league)
Fishing
Drew explaining the rules to everyone.
Zac and Maddox with their buffs.
Orange tribe making their
gingerbread creation
Red tribe
Purple tribe
They were assigned to make a gingerbread creation
that was reflective of the Sweat Family culture.
(I can't remember exactly how Andrew worded it--
he's better at marketing than me...)
The little personalized touches were so fun
The duck bookends!
The garage with the basketball hoop in the driveway.
We had pizza for dinner.
The "firemaking" challenge
(No fire was actually made in the church!)
"More arch!"
A nod to Grandpa's favorite advice to yell
to the boys during their HS basketball games.
Bottle flip challenge that was apparently
UNBELIEVABLY CLOSE!
Puzzle challenge
The way the game worked, we didn't actually
vote family members out, but you could collect
beads and then use them to vote for a winner.
And the winners were....
In third place:
Jane!
In second place:
Whitney!
And the sole survivor as voted by
his family members:
Brandon!
Oh, what a fun and memorable weekend. Because we took multiple trips to TX in 2023, we weren't able to spend good quality time with our extended family that summer. I was so happy that (almost) everyone could make the time to be together this weekend. Grateful to have shared so many laughs and made great memories together. Family is the best!
